Okemos is a community on the eastern side of the Lansing area, sitting immediately southeast of East Lansing in Ingham County.
Most of it lies inside Meridian Charter Township, with smaller portions reaching south into Alaiedon Township and east into Williamstown Township, so the place is better understood as a community than as a municipality with hard edges. It carries the name of a real person. Pioneer Freeman Bray platted the village in 1841 and called it Hamilton, but residents kept calling it Okemos after Chief John Okemos, whose name is generally rendered as Little Chief, of the Ojibway people. The state legislature made the popular name official in 1859 in the chief's honor, and a historic marker for him stands at the Four Corners of Okemos today. The Red Cedar River, a tributary of the Grand, runs east to west straight through the community and gives it a green spine through the middle of an otherwise suburban landscape. Okemos Public Schools serve the community and the surrounding area, and the proximity of Michigan State University shapes much of the local working population.
