Kalamazoo Charter Township is the ring of suburb wrapping the north and east edges of the city of Kalamazoo, and a century of annexations has left it in pieces rather than one shape.
It began on July 30, 1830 under a different name entirely, Arcadia Township, and at that point it covered all eight townships in the northern tier of Kalamazoo County. It was renamed Kalamazoo Township on March 2, 1836, the same day the village of Bronson was renamed Kalamazoo. Piece by piece it gave up ground to new townships: Richland in 1832, Cooper in 1837 and Oshtemo in 1839. When Michigan reached statehood in 1837 there were 1,373 people living in what remained. Later annexations by the cities of Kalamazoo and Parchment cut it further, leaving two main sections that do not touch plus a sliver joined only at a narrow point across Riverview Drive. What is left carries its own identity through the Eastwood and Westwood neighborhoods, both census-designated places in their own right, and through long-running community fixtures such as Eastwood Little League. The Gull Road corridor holds an older institutional history tied to the Sisters of St. Joseph, who ran Nazareth College there from 1914 until 1992.
