How did Pontiac come to be?
In 1971, ten school buses were destroyed in a bombing during local resistance to court-ordered school desegregation. A 1968 outbreak of a mild respiratory illness at the county health building gave the world the name 'Pontiac fever,' later tied to the bacterium Legionella. In 1825 Elizabeth Denison, a free Black woman, bought 48.5 acres in the area, believed to be the first Black woman to purchase land in the Michigan Territory.
