How to Give Your First Reiki Session to a Friend or Family Member

After a Level 1 attunement, many new practitioners feel ready to share Reiki with someone they love. A first Reiki session for a friend or family member can be simple, calm, and short, and it does not need special equipment.
This guide covers how to ask, how to set up the space, a gentle hand position plan, and what to say before and after. It is written for new Level 1 students and for anyone considering an attunement who wants to know what sharing Reiki looks like in practice.
What a First Reiki Session for Someone Else Looks Like
A first Reiki session for a friend is a quiet, clothed session where your friend lies down or sits comfortably while you rest your hands lightly on, or just above, a series of positions from the head toward the feet. Twenty to forty-five minutes is plenty, followed by a short rest and a glass of water.
That picture matches how Reiki is usually described outside the Reiki community too. The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health describes practitioners placing their hands lightly on or just above a person. A University of Minnesota guide adds that a complete session is offered to a fully clothed person through light touch, with no pressure at all.
Before You Begin: Ask, Explain, and Listen
Start with a clear invitation rather than an assumption. Ask whether your friend would like a session, and accept a "no" or "not today" with a smile. The post on Reiki ethics and consent covers this in more depth.
Next, explain what will happen in two or three plain sentences. Let your friend know they stay fully clothed, can stop at any time, and can tell you if anything feels uncomfortable.
Then ask three quick questions before they lie down:
- Would you prefer light touch, or my hands held just above your body?
- Is there anywhere you would rather I did not place my hands?
- Is lying flat comfortable, or would a chair or extra pillows suit you better?
Set Up a Simple, Comfortable Space
A quiet room where you will not be interrupted matters more than any particular furniture. A massage table is ideal, but a sofa, a firm bed, or a supportive chair works well for a first session.
- Silence both phones and let others in the home know you need some quiet time.
- Offer a pillow under the head and another under the knees, plus a light blanket, since many people cool down as they relax.
- Wash your hands and take off bulky rings or bracelets that might press or catch.
- Set a glass of water nearby for each of you.
- Soft music is optional, and silence works just as well.
A Gentle Session Plan for Beginners
Most Level 1 manuals teach a set of hand positions, and your own manual is the best guide to follow. The plan below is a simple frame that fits most of them.
1. Settle yourself first
Take a minute to sit or stand quietly with your hands together in Gassho. A few slow breaths and a silent reading of the five Reiki Principles help you arrive calm and present, the same way you begin self-Reiki.
2. Begin at the head
Many sessions open with the hands resting gently over the eyes, at the sides of the head, or beneath the back of the head. These positions tend to feel calming and help your friend settle quickly.
3. Move to the shoulders and upper body
Continue to the shoulders, the area just below the collarbones, and the front of the torso. Keep your touch light, stay on neutral areas, and hold your hands a few inches above anywhere that feels private or tender.
4. Finish at the knees and feet
Close with the knees and then the feet, which many people find grounding at the end of a session. If your friend is lying on their back, there is no need to turn them over for a first session.
5. Keep the timing relaxed
Many teachers suggest staying in each position for about three to five minutes, but you do not need a timer. The University of Minnesota guide notes that sessions run from about 15 minutes in hospital settings to 90 minutes in private practice, so a first session of 20 to 45 minutes sits comfortably in between.
6. Close gently
Lift your hands slowly, step back, and let your friend rest for a minute or two before sitting up. Offer the glass of water and give them time before they stand.
What to Say During and After
During the session, less is more. One quiet check about comfort near the start is usually enough, and after that the room can stay still.
Afterward, ask open questions such as "How do you feel?" or "What did you notice?" rather than "Did you feel the energy?" Many people describe warmth, tingling, deep relaxation, or drifting off to sleep, and others notice very little. Every one of those answers is fine.
Avoid reading meaning into what your hands felt. A warm or busy spot under your hands is your own sensation, not information about your friend's body or health. Keep your words simple and kind, and never promise a particular result.
Common Worries After a First Session
- "I did not feel anything in my hands." That is common, especially early on. Feeling energy in your hands often grows with regular practice.
- "My friend fell asleep." Many people drift off when they relax deeply. Let them rest and carry on quietly.
- "I lost track of the positions." Simply continue from wherever you are. A calm, steady presence matters more than a perfect order.
- "I felt emotional afterward." Quiet sessions can stir feelings for the giver too. Drink some water and write a few lines in your Reiki journal.
Keep Reiki in Its Place
Reiki is a complementary practice that sits alongside other care, never in place of it. The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health reports that Reiki has not been shown to have any harmful effects, and it encourages people to talk with their health care providers about decisions on their care.
If your friend mentions pain, ongoing worries, or anything that concerns you, gently encourage them to talk with a doctor or mental health professional. Sharing Reiki works best when everyone understands it as quiet time to relax, not a replacement for anything else.
Build Confidence One Session at a Time
Your own daily self-Reiki, especially during the 21 days after an attunement, is the foundation for sharing Reiki with others. Short, regular sessions with a few willing friends build more confidence than one long session each month.
Ask each person for one piece of honest feedback, such as which position felt most comfortable, and note it in your journal. The guide to what to practice between Reiki Level 1 and Level 2 offers more ideas for this stage.
If you would like guidance along the way, every attunement at Prismatic Reiki Academy includes a complete PDF manual and email support from your Master Teacher, so questions after your first sessions have somewhere to go.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I give Reiki to friends and family after Level 1?
Yes. Level 1 traditionally focuses on self-Reiki and on sharing Reiki with the people close to you. Always ask first, and keep sessions simple while you build confidence.
How long should a first Reiki session for a friend last?
Twenty to forty-five minutes is plenty for a first session. Many teachers suggest about three to five minutes in each hand position, followed by a short rest.
Do I have to touch the person during a Reiki session?
No. Light touch is common, but holding your hands just above the body is also part of Reiki practice. Ask your friend which they prefer before you begin.
What if my friend does not feel anything?
That is a common and valid experience. Ask how they feel overall, thank them for their time, and remember that a relaxed, quiet session is a good session.
