The Grand Ledge Opera House opened in 1884 as the Riverside Rink and became an opera house in 1886. Frank Dwight Fitzgerald, born in the city in 1885, served two terms as Governor of Michigan and died in office on March 16, 1939. Fitzgerald Park is named for him. The Chamber of Commerce runs the annual Yankee Doodle Day festival, with a Bridge Street parade and fireworks at dusk.
