How did Collierville come to be?
Site of the First and Second Battles of Collierville (October and November 1863) during the Civil War; the town was nearly destroyed, with reports that only three structures were left standing. Founded in 1836 by businessman Jesse R. Collier, who laid out lots on a tract once known as Oak Grove, bought space in the Memphis Enquirer, and advertised 'The Town of Collier for Sale.'.
