A fast-growing suburb in the northeast corner of Shelby County, Bartlett began as 'Union Depot,' the last Tennessee way station on the old stagecoach road running west from Nashville toward Memphis.
Incorporated in 1866 and named for a local planter, it stayed a small farm town until postwar Memphis sprawl transformed it into one of Tennessee's larger cities, home to roughly 58,000 people. Today it blends a preserved 19th-century depot heart with corporate parks and a well-regarded municipal school system. The community arose around 1829 as 'Union Depot,' the last major Tennessee way station on the westward stagecoach route from Nashville. Postwar suburban growth from Memphis drove explosive expansion, from 508 residents in 1960 to 57,786 at the 2020 census, making it Tennessee's 14th-most-populous city. By 1886 Bartlett had a school, two gristmills, three churches, several general stores, and about 300 residents. Nicholas Gotten House (2969 Court Street), an 1871 New England saltbox now housing the Bartlett Museum run by the Bartlett Historical Society. How did Bartlett come to be?
The town was named for Major Gabriel M. Bartlett, a planter whose home stood on the old Raleigh-Somerville stage road. It was officially incorporated on November 1, 1866, with fewer than 100 residents under its first mayor, Bryan Wither. When the Memphis & Ohio Railroad replaced the stage line, the settlement shifted to serve as a rail station and a farming community grew around it.
