How did Chattanooga come to be?
A vital railroad junction in the Civil War, it saw the pivotal November 1863 Battles for Chattanooga, a Union victory led by General Ulysses S. Grant. During the 1838 Trail of Tears, the U.S. Army used Ross's Landing as one of three internment camps holding Cherokee people before forced removal to Oklahoma. Incorporated on December 20, 1839.
