Keizer is a Willamette Valley city that hugs the north edge of Salem in Marion County, best known worldwide for the rainbow iris fields grown just beyond its limits.
It only became its own city in 1982, when residents voted to incorporate rather than be swallowed by Salem, and it retains a tight-knit, festival-and-baseball civic character. Every spring the town erupts in bloom for its signature iris celebration. The Keizer Days Parade began June 24, 1950, organized by the Keizer Commercial Club; it was renamed the Keizer Iris Festival Parade in 1988. How did Keizer come to be?
Named for pioneer Thomas Dove Keizur, who arrived in the Wagon Train of 1843; the spelling changed to 'Keizer' through a misspelling in donation land claim records.
