Alabaster is a city in Shelby County, Alabama, sitting on U.S. Highway 31 near Interstate 65 as a southern suburb of Birmingham.
It grew out of a company town built for workers of the Alabaster Lime Company and absorbed the neighboring city of Siluria in 1971. Alabaster takes its name from the Alabaster Lime Company and the mineral associated with the high-calcium limestone deposit the town was built on, and it began as housing for that company's workers. 1896: Siluria Cotton Mills founded by T. C. Thompson in the adjoining community of Siluria. 1952: The town's first bank opened. 1921: Thompson High School building constructed, the second consolidated school in Shelby County. Buck Creek Park: Municipal park on the site of the historic Buck Creek (Siluria) cotton mill, with trails, a disc golf course and event space along the creek. Veterans Park: City park with playgrounds, walking trails and sports fields. Thompson High School: The original school building was constructed in 1921 and became the second consolidated school in Shelby County. CityFest, held each June with live entertainment, food, vendors and children's activities. Schools are operated by the Shelby County School District, including elementary, intermediate, middle and high schools. Educational services, health care and social assistance accounted for about 25 percent of the workforce (2020 figures). Historic industry: lime and limestone quarrying by the Alabaster Lime Company, and cotton milling at Siluria. Population: 33,284 (2020 census).
