Gadsden is the seat of Etowah County in northeast Alabama, on the Coosa River.
It developed in the 19th century around river shipping and later heavy manufacturing, and has since shifted toward health care, education and food processing. Noccalula Falls, a 90-foot waterfall inside a city park, is the landmark most associated with Gadsden; a long-told local legend attaches the name to a young Cherokee woman, though at least one independent researcher has published evidence that the story is apocryphal. The city is named for Colonel James Gadsden of South Carolina, who negotiated the Gadsden Purchase, the 1853 acquisition of territory in the Southwest from Mexico. 1946: The city purchased the Noccalula Falls land for $70,000; improvements began in 1950 and additional acreage was acquired in 1959. 1830s: Following Cherokee removal, a settlement developed at the site.
