A storm in 1858 severed the Toronto Islands from the mainland, turning a natural peninsula into islands. The Town of York was founded on August 27, 1793 by Lieutenant-Governor John Graves Simcoe, who chose the site as a defensible capital for Upper Canada. Early settlers called it "Little York," a cluster of log homes near the mouth of the Don River. The underground PATH network is one of the world's largest subterranean pedestrian systems, linking Union Station to offices, arenas and shops. A vast ravine system cut by the Humber, Don and other rivers threads green wilderness through the urban core.
