Powell is an incorporated city in Park County in the Bighorn Basin of northwest Wyoming, about 75 miles east of Yellowstone National Park and 98 miles south of Billings, Montana.
It grew out of the federal Shoshone irrigation project and remains an agricultural and college town. Powell is the homesteading town created by the federal Shoshone irrigation project and the nearest town to the Heart Mountain Relocation Center and its interpretive center. Northwest College was founded in 1946 as the University of Wyoming Northwest Center; University of Wyoming backing ended in 1950 and the school took its current name in 1989. Incorporated in 1909. Named for John Wesley Powell, United States soldier, geologist and explorer. Heart Mountain Relocation Center site: A World War II incarceration site for Japanese Americans that opened August 11, 1942 and closed November 10, 1945, holding a maximum of 10,767 residents. Designated a National Historic Landmark in 2007. Northwest College, a two-year residential college. Heart Mountain Interpretive Center and its exhibits on wartime incarceration and civil rights.
