Weirton is a city in West Virginia's northern panhandle, in Hancock and Brooke counties, along the Ohio River.
It extends from the Ohio border on the west to the Pennsylvania border on the east, at a point where the state narrows to about 5 miles across. Weirton is named for Ernest T. Weir and grew around the Weirton Steel Corporation he founded there in 1909; the city stretches across the northern panhandle from the Ohio border to the Pennsylvania border. In December 2022 Form Energy announced a $760 million iron-air battery manufacturing plant on a 55 acre site in Weirton, expected to employ about 750 workers, with $105 million in state funds contributed toward construction. On July 1, 1947 the incorporated towns of Hollidays Cove, Marland Heights and Weirton Heights merged with the remaining unincorporated area to form the city of Weirton.
