Concord is New Hampshire's capital, seated on the Merrimack River as the seat of Merrimack County.
Its name means harmony, chosen in 1765 to end a boundary feud, and its legacy runs on two rails: the Abbot-Downing Concord Coach that carried the American West, and the local granite that built landmarks from the state house to the Library of Congress. Governor Benning Wentworth renamed it Concord in 1765 to signify the new harmony after a bitter boundary dispute with neighboring Bow. Named the official seat of New Hampshire's state government in 1808; the State House was completed in 1819. Became the seat of Merrimack County in 1823, with the county courthouse built in 1857.
