Blair is the county seat of Washington County in eastern Nebraska, set on bluffs above the Missouri River valley, and is counted within the Omaha-Council Bluffs metropolitan area.
It combines a county-seat downtown with an adjacent industrial bioscience campus and surrounding farmland. Blair is the site of the Cargill bioscience campus, a roughly 650-acre bio-processing complex shared with several biotechnology firms, and it carries a Danish-American heritage rooted in Dana College, which operated in the city from 1884 to 2010. Named for railroad financier John Insley Blair, credited with bringing the railroad to the town. 1869: Blair was selected county seat of Washington County by popular vote. 2010: Dana College closed; its archives were moved within Blair and renamed the Danish American Archive and Library.
