Kearney is the county seat of Buffalo County in central Nebraska, on Interstate 80 and the Union Pacific main line in the Platte River valley.
It is the fifth most populous city in Nebraska and serves as a regional hub for education, healthcare and manufacturing. Kearney is the main viewing base for the annual sandhill crane migration, when several hundred thousand cranes stage along an 80-mile stretch of the central Platte River between late February and early April. 1905: The institution now known as the University of Nebraska at Kearney was founded as the Nebraska State Normal School.
