Whitefish is a city in Flathead County, Montana, at the south end of Whitefish Lake and at the foot of Big Mountain.
It is a stop on Amtrak's Empire Builder route and lies west of Glacier National Park. Whitefish Mountain Resort on Big Mountain, open since 1947, together with the town's role as the rail stop nearest the west side of Glacier National Park. The settlement was first known as Stumptown because of the timber cleared for the railroad and town, which left stumps in the streets. September 10, 1927 to June 22, 1928: the Great Northern Railway depot was built. 1905: the town incorporated. It became a city when its population reached 1,000 by 1910. Whitefish Lake: Natural lake of about 5.2 square miles on the north edge of town. Whitefish Mountain Resort: Ski area on Big Mountain that opened on December 14, 1947, built through community effort. Great Northern Railway Passenger and Freight Depot and Division Office: Depot built between September 10, 1927 and June 22, 1928, listed on the National Register of Historic Places on July 11, 2002. The Stumptown Historical Society owns the building, BNSF Railway leases upper-floor offices, Amtrak leases the first floor, and the society runs a local history museum next to the waiting room.
