The Tatcan, a Bay Miwok people connected to the Saclans of Walnut Creek, lived in the San Ramon Valley long before that. Grazing land belonging to Mission San Jose reached through the valley after 1797, and in 1833 the Rancho San Ramon grant went to Mariano Castro and his uncle Bartolo Pacheco, with Castro holding the northern half that covers the modern community. A decade later the Alamo, Las Trampas and Tice Valley areas passed to the brothers Inocencio and Jose Romero. Today about 15,314 residents live in a semi-rural East Bay suburb roughly 28 miles east of San Francisco, equidistant from Walnut Creek and Danville, looking east toward Mount Diablo. Las Trampas Regional Wilderness covers 5,342 acres of forested hillside above the valley, and Hap Magee Ranch Park preserves 16 acres of a former cattle ranch and children's summer camp.

Do I need to drive over to Walnut Creek or Danville for any part of the training?
No part of it happens in person. The academy is run entirely online from Madison Heights, Michigan, so there is no East Bay venue, no scheduled session and no package to collect. You download the course, work through it at home, and revisit it whenever you like.
