Methodist settlers from Ontario, led by John Lake, founded it under the Temperance Colonization Society. In 1906 it became a city of about 4,500 people, formed by the amalgamation of Saskatoon, Riversdale and Nutana. The city straddles a bend in the South Saskatchewan River. The Delta Bessborough, a castle-like Canadian National Railway hotel opened in 1932, stands on the riverbank. The Meewasin Valley trail network protects the riverbank park spaces. On the city's edge, Wanuskewin Heritage Park preserves roughly 6,000 years of First Nations history. The Broadway Avenue and Nutana district forms the city's bohemian arts hub.
