What the Reiki Usui Lineage Chart Means and Why Your Line Matters
By Reverend Michael Allison · September 5, 2026
What a Reiki Lineage Chart Actually Is
A Reiki lineage chart is a record that names every teacher in an unbroken chain from your instructor all the way back to Mikao Usui. Each name on that chart received an attunement and then passed the energy forward to the next person. Think of it as a family tree for the practice itself.
When you receive your attunement, your teacher's name is added to that chain, and yours begins beneath it. That single document connects you to more than a century of Reiki teachers, students, and healing work.
How the Usui Tradition Defines the Line
Mikao Usui is the origin point of the Usui System of Natural Healing, the tradition most Western Reiki students train in today. He taught Chujiro Hayashi, and Hayashi taught Hawayo Takata, who brought Reiki to the United States and trained the first Western Reiki Masters in the 1970s and 1980s. From Takata's students, the practice spread outward into thousands of lineage lines across the world. Our Usui Reiki Level 1 course traces its lineage through this same tradition, documented in full for every student.
Every legitimate Usui lineage traces back through one of Takata's twenty-two Masters. That is why teachers often share their chart openly and proudly. It is proof that the transmission has stayed connected, person to person, without a break in the chain.
Why the Line of Transmission Matters
In Reiki, the attunement is the vehicle that opens a student to the energy. It is not learned from a book or a video. The attunement is passed directly from an attuned teacher to the student, and that personal transmission is what makes Reiki different from other forms of energy work you can study on your own.
The lineage chart is the evidence that every teacher in your line actually received that transmission rather than simply reading about it. It gives you and your future clients a way to verify that the practice is grounded in a real, living tradition.
What a Shorter Lineage Number Means
Some students notice that lineage charts show a number, often called the lineage number or generational count, which tells you how many steps stand between you and Usui himself. A smaller number means fewer teachers between you and the origin of the practice. A larger number simply means the tradition has passed through more hands over time.
Neither number makes one practitioner more powerful than another. The quality of your training, your daily practice, and your intention matter far more than how many steps your chart contains. Still, knowing your number helps you understand where you fit in the larger story of Reiki's growth around the world.
How to Read Your Own Lineage Chart
Most Reiki lineage charts are written in a simple top-to-bottom list. Mikao Usui appears at the top, and each teacher below received their attunement from the one above. Your teacher's name will appear near the bottom, and your own name follows beneath it once you complete your training.
When you receive your certificate after training, ask your teacher to share the full lineage if it is not already printed there. A responsible teacher will give you that list without hesitation. Keeping it means you can answer the question honestly when your own students ask someday.
Lineage and the Responsibility to Teach Honestly
When you train to the Master Teacher level, such as through our Usui Reiki Master Level 3 course, and begin attuning your own students, you take on a responsibility to maintain the integrity of that line. That means teaching the Usui system as it was passed to you, being honest about your credentials, and sharing your lineage chart with every student you train. Passing an attunement is a sacred act, and honoring the chain behind it is part of that.
Rev. Michael Allison holds his Reiki Master Teacher lineage in that spirit. Every student who trains through Prismatic Reiki Academy receives a full lineage record along with their attunement, so the chain stays clear and documented for generations of practitioners to come.
Questions Students Often Ask About Lineage
- Can I receive a legitimate attunement online or at a distance? Yes. Distance attunements are practiced within the Usui tradition and carry the same lineage connection as in-person work when the teacher is properly attuned and trained.
- What if my teacher cannot give me a lineage chart? That is worth asking about directly. A teacher who trained through a recognized Usui line should have the information available.
- Does my lineage affect which symbols I learn? No. The symbols are consistent across the Usui tradition. Your lineage affects the chain of transmission, not the content of what is taught at each level.
- Can I trace my lineage further back than Usui? Usui is considered the modern origin of this system, so the chart traditionally begins with him. Some lineages connect to earlier Japanese teachers, but Usui is the universally recognized starting point for the Usui System of Natural Healing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do all Reiki traditions use a lineage chart?
The Usui tradition places strong importance on lineage documentation, and most Usui-trained teachers pass a chart to their students. Other Reiki systems may track lineage differently, but within the Usui tradition, the chart is a standard part of your training records.
Is a shorter lineage always more authentic than a longer one?
Not at all. A longer lineage simply means the practice has traveled through more teachers over time, which is natural as Reiki has spread globally over decades. What matters most is that the line is unbroken and that each teacher in the chain received a proper attunement from someone who was fully trained.
What happens to my lineage if I receive attunements at multiple levels from different teachers?
Each level of training you complete adds a new lineage entry for that level. Your Level 1 lineage may differ from your Level 2 or Master lineage if you trained with different teachers. Both are valid, and keeping all of them on record gives you a complete picture of your training history.
Can I see Rev. Michael's lineage before I train with him?
Absolutely. Sharing the lineage record with prospective students is part of practicing with transparency and care. You are welcome to reach out to Rev. Michael directly through the contact page to ask any questions about his training, his lineage, or what to expect from your attunement.
