Reiki Level 1, 2, and Master: Which Attunement Is Right for You?
By Rev. Michael Allison · May 21, 2026
Reiki training unfolds in three main stages, each with its own attunement. Knowing what each level offers makes it easy to choose your next step.
Here is a clear, beginner-friendly guide to Reiki Level 1, Level 2, and the Master level.
Reiki Level 1 — The Foundation
Level 1 opens your energy channels and connects you to Reiki energy. It focuses on self-healing and on giving Reiki to others through gentle hands-on or hands-near treatment.
This is where everyone begins. No experience is needed, and most students start practicing on themselves the very same day.
Reiki Level 2 — Symbols and Distance Healing
Level 2 introduces the Reiki symbols, which strengthen and focus the energy. It also teaches distance healing — the ability to send Reiki across any distance.
Many practitioners choose Level 2 when they want to work with clients, since distance healing makes it possible to help anyone, anywhere.
Reiki Master — Teaching and Mastery
The Master level deepens your connection, introduces the Master symbol, and gives you the ability to attune others and teach Reiki.
It suits practitioners who feel called to share Reiki as teachers, or who simply want the fullest depth of personal practice.
How Long Between Levels?
There is no need to rush. Many teachers suggest at least 21 days between Level 1 and Level 2 so the first attunement can settle, and several months of practice before the Master level.
Let each level become comfortable before moving on. Steady practice matters more than speed.
Which Level Should You Start With?
Almost everyone begins with Level 1. It builds the foundation that every other level rests on. If you already hold Level 1, Level 2 is the natural next step toward working with others.
