Sumter is a mid-sized South Carolina city about 45 miles east of Columbia, built on cotton, railroads, and now anchored by nearby Shaw Air Force Base.
It takes its name and 'Gamecock City' identity from Revolutionary War general Thomas Sumter, the 'Fighting Gamecock' who harassed British forces with guerrilla raids. Its crown jewel is Swan Lake Iris Gardens, the only U.S. public park home to all eight known swan species. Incorporated as Sumterville in 1845; the name was shortened to Sumter in 1855.
