Bristol is a town on a peninsula in Narragansett Bay, between Providence and Newport, and the seat of Bristol County.
It is a deep-water harbor town with a long boatbuilding history and a college campus on its shoreline. Its Fourth of July celebration, described as the oldest continuously observed Independence Day celebration in the United States, with a first recorded observance in 1777. Roger Williams University, named for the Rhode Island cofounder Roger Williams, was established in 1956.
