Midwest City is a planned suburb east of Oklahoma City that was born of World War II, purpose-built by developer W.P. "Bill" Atkinson to house workers at the adjacent Tinker Air Force Base.
Now the state's eighth-largest city with more than 58,000 residents, its identity is welded to Tinker, Oklahoma's largest single-site employer and one of the nation's key military aircraft-maintenance hubs. W.P. "Bill" Atkinson, a former journalist, bought surrounding land and drew up a plan for the first model town in Oklahoma devoted to aviation. Town Center Plaza, a central retail and civic development. Rose State College campus. The Reed Conference Center, a roughly 60,000-square-foot convention venue built in 2003. The Juneteenth Midwest City Family Festival began in 2023. Tinker Air Force Base hosts the annual Star-Spangled Salute air show each summer. A General Motors assembly plant operated in the area from 1979 to 2006; after its closure the property was transferred to Tinker AFB. Rose State College (opened 1970, originally Oscar Rose Junior College) is a major local institution serving many military-affiliated students. How did Midwest City come to be?
The federal government secured land for an air depot in 1941; the airfield was activated on March 1, 1942, and named Tinker Field on October 14, 1942 for Major General Clarence L. Tinker.
