Bartlesville is the county seat of Washington County in northeastern Oklahoma, on the Caney River.
It developed around the first commercial oil well in what is now Oklahoma and remains a center for energy-company operations, architecture and music programming. Bartlesville is the town where Oklahoma's first commercial oil well, the Nellie Johnstone, came in on April 15, 1897, and the longtime home of Phillips Petroleum; it also holds Frank Lloyd Wright's only realized skyscraper, Price Tower. 1873: Jacob Bartles, son-in-law of Delaware chief Charles Journeycake, settled the area; he opened a trading post in 1874, and the town was named after him. 1957: an early pay cable television experiment was tested in the city. 1899: the railroad reached the town. Bartlesville Community Center: Designed by William Wesley Peters, a student of Frank Lloyd Wright; it hosts OKM Music. OKM Music festival, begun in 1985 as the OK Mozart International Festival and renamed OKM Music around 2018. Tri County Technology Center, recognized in December 2018 as a recipient of the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award. Oil and energy: ConocoPhillips and Phillips 66 together employ or contract with more than 3,800 people in the area. Population: 37,290 (2020 census).
