How did Athens come to be?

Athens County was formed in 1805 from territory previously part of Washington County, and was named for the ancient center of learning at Athens, Greece. University lands were at first mostly leased, and when many lessors did not pay their rents most of the land was sold, with the proceeds funding the university's growth. In 1904 the U.S. Army and the Ohio National Guard held joint training exercises near the city, and a dispute over an arrest escalated into a shooting on Washington Street in which one guardsman was killed and five others were wounded.
