Greenwood is the most populous suburb in the southern half of the Indianapolis metro, sitting in Johnson County between I-65 and I-69.
It grew from an 1823 pioneer cabin into a retail, logistics, and manufacturing hub anchored by Greenwood Park Mall, whose parking lot covers the ground where the town literally began. Old Town Greenwood, Craig Park, and a craft-beer scene give the fast-growing city a distinct local identity beneath its interstate-suburb surface. The 1818 Treaty of St. Mary's opened central Indiana to settlement; in 1823 brothers John B. and Isaac Smock built the first cabin in northern Johnson County, and the settlement was called Smocktown or Smock's Settlement. Historically documented as one of 19 Indiana 'sundown towns' where African Americans faced restrictions in the mid-20th century. On January 1, 1900, the Indianapolis, Greenwood & Franklin Railway opened as the Indianapolis area's first electric interurban line. Greenwood Commercial Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1991 (about 25 buildings across roughly 3.2 acres). Craig Park, home to Freedom Festival, WAMMfest, and the Greenwood Amphitheater. Greenwood Park Mall, built over the site of the original 1823 Smock settlement. How did Greenwood come to be?
On January 1, 1900, the Indianapolis, Greenwood & Franklin Railway opened as the Indianapolis area's first electric interurban line. Renamed Greenfield in 1825, then changed to Greenwood in 1833 to avoid confusion with Greenfield in Hancock County. On July 17, 2022, a mass shooting at Greenwood Park Mall killed three people; an armed civilian bystander shot and stopped the gunman.
