Normal is a central-Illinois college town in McLean County that literally took its name from a teacher-training "normal school" - today's Illinois State University.
Paired with neighboring Bloomington as the "Twin Cities," it is the birthplace of Steak 'n Shake and, more recently, the home of Rivian's massive electric-vehicle plant. Its walkable, reinvented downtown is playfully called Uptown. Illinois State Normal University was renamed Illinois State University in stages, becoming simply Illinois State University in 1967. Laid out in 1854 as North Bloomington by Joseph Parkinson, with civic leader Jesse W. Fell instrumental in routing railroads through the area. Illinois Gov. William H. Bissell signed the law creating Illinois State Normal University on February 18, 1857 - the oldest public university in Illinois. Steak 'n Shake's first restaurant opened here in February 1934, when Gus Belt converted a gas station/chicken stand into a burger-and-shakes stand. Annual festivals include the Sweet Corn Blues Festival (Labor Day weekend), the Sugar Creek Arts Festival, and Make Music Normal each June.
