Both banks of the River Nore carry the streets of this Leinster city, whose name comes from the Irish Cill Chainnigh, the church of Cainneach, or St Canice. William Marshall, Lord of Leinster, granted a town charter in 1207, and King James I conferred city status by Royal Charter in 1609.
