In 1800 Philemon Wright came from Woburn, Massachusetts with his family and roughly 25 to 33 labourers to found Hull on the north shore of the Ottawa River, an agricultural settlement first called Wright's Town. In 1806 Wright launched the Ottawa Valley timber trade, floating the first square-timber raft down the Ottawa River to Quebec City. The city takes its name from the Gatineau River, itself named for Nicolas Gatineau, a 17th-century fur trader who reportedly drowned in the river around 1683. Indigenous Anishinaabe names for the river include Tenagadino Zibi. Gatineau was incorporated as a village in 1933, became a town in 1946 and a city in 1975, and in 2002 the province amalgamated Aylmer, Hull, the old Gatineau, Buckingham and Masson-Angers into the single new City of Gatineau. Roughly 63.5 percent of residents are fluent in both French and English. The city is home to the Canadian Museum of History, designed by Douglas Cardinal, an architect of Blackfoot heritage, and the building's flowing curved forms famously avoid straight lines. Although this is a Quebec city, daily life is tightly integrated with Ottawa, Ontario, forming one census metropolitan area across a provincial boundary, and a self-paced online course works the same on either side of that boundary.

The whole course is online, and nothing is mailed to you. Every lesson and attunement is delivered digitally, so nothing has to cross the river, the provincial boundary or the international border to reach you. You can open your materials at home in Gatineau, at your desk in Ottawa or anywhere else, and work through them at your own pace. Rev. Michael Allison teaches from Madison Heights, Michigan, and there are no in-person sessions anywhere in the Outaouais. Reiki is offered as complementary support for relaxation and a calmer daily rhythm, not as medical care.
