The city is known for a harbour framed by the 1897 Parliament Buildings and the 1908 Empress Hotel. Afternoon tea is a signature ritual, and the Fairmont Empress serves roughly 500,000 cups of tea each year. Winters are the mildest of any city in Canada, and a higher share of people bike to work here than in any other Canadian city. Starting in 1904, Jennie Butchart landscaped an exhausted limestone quarry into the 55-acre Butchart Gardens. Beacon Hill Park is home to Mile 0, the western terminus of the Trans-Canada Highway.
