A Lake Michigan port city positioned almost exactly midway between Milwaukee and Chicago, Kenosha spent most of the 20th century as an auto-manufacturing town that built Nash, Rambler, and AMC vehicles.
After the factories closed it reinvented its harbor with museums, a vintage electric streetcar loop, and a lakefront festival market, all wrapped in the highest concentration of Italian-Americans in Wisconsin. European settlers from New York arrived June 6, 1835; the settlement was first called Pike Creek, then Southport in 1837 for its role as a Great Lakes shipping port.
