Helper is a small city in Carbon County at the mouth of Price Canyon, at the western end of the Book Cliffs.
It grew as a railroad and coal town and drew immigrants from southern and eastern Europe and from Asia to work the mines and the rail yard. Helper takes its name from the railroad helper engines that were stationed there to push trains up the 2.4 percent grade of Price Canyon. Carbon County was created March 8, 1894 from Emery County, and was named for the element carbon in reference to its coal industry. Butch Cassidy and Elzy Lay stayed in Helper the day before the Pleasant Valley Coal Company robbery on April 21, 1897. True West Magazine named Helper its top western town for 2006 in the January and February 2007 issue.
