How did Albuquerque come to be?
Founded in 1706 as La Villa de Alburquerque by New Mexico governor Francisco Cuervo y Valdes, as an outpost on El Camino Real linking Mexico City to the northern frontier of New Spain. The historic core, Old Town, developed around a central plaza and the San Felipe de Neri Church, which dates to the colonial era. As an early transcontinental air-service stop, the city earned the 'Crossroads of the Southwest' nickname.
