Founded in the spring of 1718 by the French Mississippi Company under Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne de Bienville, on land inhabited by the Chitimacha people. Hurricane Katrina in August 2005 flooded more than 80% of the city and killed more than 1,800 people across the region. The historic streetcar lines, including the St. Charles Avenue line. New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival (Jazz Fest) is a signature spring music-and-food event. Tourism is a cornerstone industry, driven by Mardi Gras, Jazz Fest, and the French Quarter. How did New Orleans come to be?
Homer Plessy's 1896 case, Plessy v. Ferguson, originated here and enshrined the "separate but equal" doctrine. Site of the 1891 lynching of 11 Italian immigrants, one of the largest mass lynchings in U.S. history. Passed from French to Spanish rule and back before the 1803 Louisiana Purchase brought it into the United States.
