Fairfield is a town in Fairfield County, Connecticut, on Long Island Sound between Bridgeport and Westport.
One of Connecticut's original 1639 settlements, it is a coastal residential community made up of several distinct villages, including Southport and Greenfield Hill, and it hosts two universities. One of Connecticut's original 1639 towns, burned by British forces in July 1779 and rebuilt, with its colonial village centers now preserved as historic districts. British forces landed at Fairfield Beach and burned much of the town on July 7 and 8, 1779, during the Revolutionary War. Roger Ludlow had first seen the area in 1637, during the Pequot War.
