What to Do If You Felt Nothing During Your Reiki Attunement

Topics: Reiki Attunements
You sat quietly, received your Reiki attunement, and waited for something to happen. Maybe you felt a little relaxed, or maybe you felt nothing at all. If you are now wondering whether it worked, you are in good company.
Feeling little or nothing during an attunement is one of the most common things new students describe. This guide explains why sensations vary and what to practice in the weeks after, so you get to know your Reiki through steady practice instead of one quiet half hour.
Feeling nothing is a common experience
Feeling nothing during a Reiki attunement is common. Sensations vary from person to person, and many people notice changes later, during daily self-practice. Give yourself Reiki each day for the next three weeks, keep short notes, and judge your practice by showing up rather than by any one feeling.
People describe attunements in very different ways. Some notice warmth in the hands, gentle tingling, soft colors or a wave of calm. Others sit through the whole attunement and notice nothing unusual at all.
The academy's own guide to receiving your attunement says this plainly. Many people feel warmth or tingling, others feel very little in the moment and notice the shift later, and there is no wrong way to receive.
Why sensations vary from person to person
How much you notice during an attunement depends on ordinary things. How tired you are, how busy your mind is, and how much you expected to feel can all change what you notice in a short, quiet session.
Trying hard to feel something often makes it harder. When attention turns into watching and checking, the body stays a little tense, and subtle sensations are easy to miss. Some people also notice body sensations less than others, in Reiki and in daily life.
In the Usui tradition, an attunement is not measured by what you feel during it. The academy describes the connection as open for life once you are attuned, and the practice that follows is where you come to know it.
Give it three weeks of daily self-Reiki
The most useful thing you can do after any attunement is practice on yourself every day. The Usui tradition describes the first 21 days after an attunement as a settling period, often called the 21-day clearing.
Set aside ten to twenty minutes a day. Rest your hands on or just above each position you were taught, stay with each one for a few minutes, and let your breathing slow down. If you need a refresher, follow the steps in how to practice self-Reiki every day.
Judge the practice by whether you showed up, not by what you felt. A short session done every day teaches you far more than one long session spent waiting for a sign.
Notice the quiet signs
When people say they felt nothing, they are often looking for something dramatic. The first changes students describe tend to be small and easy to overlook.
- Warmth or a light heaviness in the hands that comes and goes
- A calmer few minutes after a session, even on a busy day
- Feelings or old memories rising to the surface for a short time
- A pull to rest, drink more water or spend time outdoors
- Wanting a few quiet minutes at the end of the day
None of these is a test you must pass. They are simply the kind of details that are easier to see once you start writing them down.
Keep a short Reiki journal
A journal turns vague impressions into something you can look back on. After each session, write the date, how long you practiced, and one or two words about how you felt before and after.
After two or three weeks, read back through your notes. Patterns that were hard to see day to day often stand out when you read several weeks at once. The guide on how to keep a Reiki journal has simple prompts to start with.
Practice sensing energy in your hands
Sensitivity in the hands often grows with practice. A simple exercise is to rub your palms together for a few seconds, then hold them a few inches apart and slowly move them closer and farther away.
Some people feel warmth, a light pressure or a tingle between the palms. If you feel nothing at first, try again on another day. The steps in how to feel energy in your hands walk through a few variations.
You can also add Hatsurei Ho, a traditional Japanese Reiki meditation, to your routine. It gives your practice a steady shape, even on days when you notice very little.
Let the Reiki principles carry you
The five Reiki principles include the line "Just for today, do not worry." It fits this moment well, because worrying about whether your attunement worked can become the very thing that keeps you from practicing.
Try reading the principles aloud before each self-session. It is a gentle way to set the worry down for a few minutes and simply begin.
When to reach out to your teacher
If a few weeks of daily practice still leave you unsure, write to the teacher who gave your attunement. Describe what you have been doing and what you have noticed, even if it seems small. A good teacher welcomes these questions.
Every attunement from Prismatic Reiki Academy includes email support from your Master Teacher, so you can send Rev. Michael Allison a note through the contact page. If you are still choosing a teacher, these questions to ask a Reiki teacher include how they support students afterward.
A gentle word about care
Reiki is a complementary practice that many people use for relaxation and calm. It does not replace care from a doctor or mental health professional. If you have a health concern, keep working with your own care team alongside your practice.
Frequently Asked Questions
Did my Reiki attunement fail if I felt nothing?
Feeling nothing does not mean the attunement failed. In the Usui tradition an attunement is not measured by sensation, and many students notice changes later, during daily self-practice.
How long does it take to feel Reiki after an attunement?
It varies. Some people notice warmth in their hands within days, and others take weeks of daily practice. A short journal helps you see small changes over time.
Should I take the attunement again?
Give yourself about three weeks of daily self-Reiki first. Then write to your teacher, describe your practice, and ask whether they recommend repeating it.
Does a distance attunement feel different from an in-person one?
Experiences vary with both. A distance attunement is received in a quiet moment you choose, and some people feel very little at the time and notice the shift afterward.
