How to Practice Self-Reiki Every Day After Your Attunement
By Reverend Michael Allison · August 30, 2026
Your attunement is one of the most meaningful steps you will take on your healing path. But many new students finish their training and then wonder, "Now what do I actually do each day?" The answer is beautifully simple: you practice on yourself.
Self-Reiki is the foundation of everything else you will do as a Reiki practitioner. Mikao Usui himself taught his students to begin with their own bodies, their own energy, and their own hearts before extending healing to others.
Why Self-Reiki Matters More Than Most Students Realize
When you receive your attunement, your system begins a period of adjustment and clearing. Practicing self-Reiki every day supports that process and helps the energy flow become second nature to you. Think of it the way you think of learning any new skill: regular, gentle practice builds confidence and depth.
Self-Reiki also keeps you honest with yourself. Placing your hands on your own body and holding space for yourself is a quiet act of self-awareness. Over time, you learn what balanced energy feels like for you personally, and that becomes your reference point for everything else.
How Long Should a Self-Reiki Session Be?
A full self-Reiki session with all traditional hand positions takes about 45 minutes to an hour. That is a wonderful goal, and you should absolutely do full sessions when your schedule allows. But even 10 to 15 minutes of intentional self-Reiki each day will make a real difference.
Shorter sessions are not lesser sessions. A focused 15-minute practice before bed or first thing in the morning will do more for your development than an occasional marathon session once a week. Consistency is what builds the relationship with the energy.
A Simple Daily Hand Position Sequence
The following sequence covers the major energy centers of the head, torso, and lower body. Move through each position slowly and hold it for three to five minutes, or longer if you feel guided to stay.
- Eyes and forehead. Cup both palms gently over your closed eyes. This position quiets mental chatter and supports the third eye center.
- Back of the head. Cradle the base of your skull with both hands. Many people feel warmth and a sense of deep release here almost immediately.
- Throat. Place both hands lightly on the sides of your neck, avoiding direct pressure on the throat itself. This position supports clear communication and self-expression.
- Heart center. Cross your hands over your chest, palms flat. This is often the most emotionally resonant position and a good place to linger if you are working through something difficult.
- Solar plexus. Place both hands just below your ribcage. This area holds a lot of stress and tension for most people, and Reiki here can bring a noticeable sense of settling.
- Lower abdomen. Rest both hands below your navel. This position connects to your sacral energy and your sense of safety and groundedness.
- Knees and feet. Finish by placing a hand on each knee, then moving to the soles of your feet if you can reach them comfortably. Grounding at the end helps you transition back into your day.
Setting the Right Intention Before You Begin
Before you place your hands anywhere, take three slow breaths and set a simple intention. You do not need elaborate affirmations or ritual. Something as quiet as "I am open to healing and balance" is enough to orient the session. Intention is the steering wheel, and the Reiki energy does the rest.
If you are a Reiki Level 2 student, you may choose to draw or visualize your symbols before you begin. Using the Power Symbol to activate your hands and the Mental and Emotional Symbol over your heart center adds a layer of focus that many students find very supportive in daily practice.
Working Self-Reiki Into a Busy Life
One of the most practical things about self-Reiki is how adaptable it is. You can practice lying in bed before you get up in the morning, sitting quietly after lunch, or winding down at night. Some students do a short session in a parked car before a stressful meeting, and that works just as well.
The key is to remove any idea that self-Reiki requires a perfect setting. Candles and quiet music are lovely, and you should enjoy them when you can. But the energy is available to you anywhere, anytime, because it is already part of you.
Tracking Your Experience Over Time
Keeping a simple journal of your daily self-Reiki sessions is one of the most valuable habits you can build. You do not need to write paragraphs. A few notes about what you noticed, where you felt heat or tingling, what emotions came up, or how you felt afterward will create a record that becomes genuinely illuminating over weeks and months.
Students who journal consistently tend to develop their intuition faster. They start to see patterns, and those patterns teach them things no class can. Your own practice becomes one of your best teachers.
When Students Feel Like Nothing Is Happening
Almost every new student goes through a period where self-Reiki feels flat or uneventful. This is completely normal and does not mean the energy is absent. It usually means your nervous system is still learning to perceive subtle sensations that were always there but went unnoticed before.
Keep showing up. Keep placing your hands on your body with a gentle, open attitude. The awareness develops gradually, the way your eyes adjust when you walk into a dimly lit room. One day you will realize you are feeling things clearly that you could not detect at all a month ago.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to practice self-Reiki every single day to get results?
Daily practice is the ideal, and even five minutes counts toward building the habit. Missing a day here and there will not set you back, but the students who practice consistently, even briefly, tend to grow the fastest in their sensitivity and confidence.
Can I do self-Reiki while I am going through my 21-day clearing period?
Yes, and it is actually highly recommended during that time. Daily self-Reiki supports your system as it adjusts to the new energetic opening your attunement created. It is one of the most supportive things you can do for yourself in those first weeks.
Is there a wrong way to do self-Reiki hand positions?
There is no dangerous way to place your hands, and minor variations in position are completely fine. If a particular position feels uncomfortable for your body, adjust it. The intention and the quality of your attention matter more than exact hand placement.
Should I take off my jewelry or crystals before a self-Reiki session?
This is a personal choice, and many practitioners happily wear crystals or jewelry during sessions. Some students prefer to remove metal jewelry so they can tune in without distraction. Try both approaches and notice whether you feel any difference in your experience.
